Cheering on Special Olympics of North Carolina Athletes

At the end of May, members of Triangle Young Professionals Civitan proudly volunteered at Special Olympics North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. Our group spent the day at the awards station, where we had the honor of cheering on athletes and presenting medals to celebrate their incredible accomplishments. It’s something our members look forward to each and every year.

From the moment we stepped onto the turf at St. Augustine’s University, our members were ready for the day. We split into teams—some offering water and chatting with athletes, while others collected medals from the awards table. From there, teams escorted the athletes to the podium, where each and every one was celebrated, awarded a medal, and cheered on.

From high-fives and hugs to standing ovations, the energy at the awards station was electric. Every medal ceremony was a celebration—not just of competition, but of courage, perseverance, and community spirit. It was an unforgettable experience that reminded us why service is at the heart of everything we do.

 Why This Volunteer Opportunity Matters

Volunteering with Special Olympics aligns closely with Civitan’s mission to serve and support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These events aren’t just about sports—they’re about inclusion, empowerment, and creating a world where everyone is valued and celebrated for who they are.

By showing up, cheering loudly, and lending our time and energy, we help foster a more accepting and connected community. For many of us, this is our favorite service event of the year. We’re already looking forward to cheering on athletes at the Summer Olympic Games!

Looking Ahead

We’re so thankful to Special Olympics North Carolina for welcoming us into their incredible community and giving us the opportunity to serve. It’s truly a special day for our members to be a part of.

Our annual Cornament Tournament is just a few short weeks away, and all proceeds will benefit Special Olympics North Carolina. We’re excited to spend the day tossing bags and raising money for a great cause.
